Since I first became involved with PCBUILD, so many years ago, I have considered a FAQ or series of articles to help the novice computer user understand and trouble shoot problems. It seems time for me to get to it. It will be in the form of a weekly article posted here to our web site.
Now, with that said, this article is not intended for someone with an A+ Tech Certification or other advanced training in computer repair. I intend to start at the beginning, so it maybe a bit redundant for those with advanced skills.
It is time for my basic words of advice. If you have a newer computer, still covered under warranty, I want you to think long and hard before you take the cover off of the case. Often this will violate any existing warranty and you could be without the warranty if you are required to replace some of the parts.

Today's world is full of communication. We work everyday on our phones, email, texting, and more. But more and more companies are switching to VOIP and Video conferencing solutions. And now today, though Skype, users can call each other for free over the internet with other Skype users and engage in interactive phone calls. For example, newer models of Samsung phones, like the Galaxy 2, have a front facing camera which enables users to use Skype on their phone. Today's world is full of communication. Services such as Megameeting web conferencing are a good solution for meetings with a large number of participants, but there are better alternatives for everyday 1 on 1 interactions. Though Skype, users can call each other for free over the internet with other Skype users and engage in interactive phone calls.
Skype is a VOIP client, which is a Voice over IP, and the technology has finally reached millions of users. Skype right now has over 10,000,000 people online daily talking and communicating. One of the greatest advantages of using Skype is that if you want to call your loved ones or friends off in foreign countries, it's completely free! In this guide, I'm going to go over getting Skype and starting a video call with a friend of mine in Canada.

Many users of Firefox will never enconter this issue. But for others, Mozilla Firefox useses a large amount of memory when it's on. Especially when you leave Firefox on for a long period of time like I do. Firefox's desgin enables it to cache contents or keep things in memory for future use. Especially for sites you visit most often. Because of this, you will notice that your computer will slow down after a little while if you leave Firefox on over night or have over 20 tabs open for a long period of time.
Firefox's typical memory useage is around 100-150mb, but on higher end systems, it can be higher as Firefox takes advantage of the ability to render your webpages faster.
To check how much memory Firefox is using, open your Task Manager. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL on Windows XP - Windows 7 and Select Open Task Manager. Depending on your computer, this may just bring up the Task Manager automatically.
Under the Processes tab, find Firefox.exe and see how much memory it's using. If it's higher than 150mb, use some of thse tips below to cut down your memory useage.
- If you are using WindowBlinds, this causes a huge conflict. Add Firefox to WindowBlinds Exclusion list to prevent WindowBlinds from using it's themes with Firefox.
- Clear out your download history often. Firefox caches your downloaded files for easy opening. To empty your Downloads List, press CTRL+J and click the Clear Download List.
- Close out Firefox when you are not using it. Click the File, and Close option and select Save and Quit to save your current tabs, then reopen Firefox and it will have what you were last working on up first.
- Uninstall Extentions that you are not using. Under the Tools menu, click Add-Ons and under the Extentions tab uninstall or disable Extentions you are not using anymore. This is dramatically cut back on your memory useage.
- Update your Adobe Flash Player and Sun Java to the latest version. Often times security updates or stability updates they release fix a lot of problems.
Mozilla works hard at patching these memory problems, and if you haven't already updated to the latest version of Firefox, they highly sugguest you do so.
To check if you are using the latest version, Click Help on the menu bar and click Check for Updates to update your Firefox installation. |
