Macro viruses now
account for over 50% of all virus activity. Protect yourself and your organization.
The "Melissa" virus made big headlines disrupting corporate e-mail around the
world. The virus comes in the form of a Word document emailed to you. Once you open the
document, the virus infects your Word template. If you're using the Exchange Mail client,
it will email an infected document to the first 50 users in your address book (very
scary)! If you think you have received an email containing an infected Word document
DELETE this email.
These macro viruses are very common, but there are several
simple things you can do to help protect yourself and your
organization:
- Enable Word's internal Macro Virus Protection. Start Word,
then go to the Tools, then Options menu. Under the General Tab, make sure the Macro Virus
protection tab is checked. This will alert you before any internal macros run.
- Update your anti-virus dat files. You should update your
anti-virus programs data files TODAY. The main sites are: McAfee: http://download.mcafee.com/
Norton: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/
AVP: http://www.avp.com
As an extra precaution, we also recommend MS Word97 Service Release 2 AND Normal.dot
Security Patch. Your computer should be running Office SR2 and install the updated
security patch for the Normal.dot template file. Not only does it address some Y2K
compatibility issues with Office, it also gives an extra level of protection and warnings
against any present and future Macro viruses. You can get both from:
